Lives Touched
The Welfare of Stray Dogs is a Mumbai based animal welfare organisation
dedicated to enriching the lives of street dogs.
is a non-profit trust dedicated to helping street dogs. It was established and registered in 1985, so as to stop the mass culling of street dogs by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
Since 1994, we have been conducting sterilisation, vaccination, rescue and medical care programmes to create a healthy and safe environment for peaceful co-existence of community animals and humans.
Our mission began with stopping
the
mass culling of street
dogs, and today, we continue to advocate for humane and sustainable solutions. Through our
sterilization program,
community engagement, and compassionate care, we have made a lasting impact across the city—from
Cuffe Parade to Mahim
and Sion.

Our humane sterilisation program, in partnership with Mumbai’s civic body, helps control the street dogs population through safe practices and community collaboration. The impact is visible across the neighborhoods in which we operate, thereby resulting in lower man-animal conflict and decreased street dog population
We follow WHO guidelines, conducting mass anti-rabies vaccination drives across Mumbai. Every dog sterilised is vaccinated, and weekly drives ensure wide coverage. With over 90,000 dogs vaccinated and strict safety standards followed, we also spread awareness through public education to help build safer communities.
Scores of injured and sick street animals come into the free OPD Clinic at WSD, Sewri for treatment. The clinic treats various kinds of cases, from wounds, skin problems, maggot wounds, and eye infections to vaccinations to even severe cases like kidney problems and jaundice, which require a regular follow-up. Wherever required, WSD also runs blood tests for the animals brought into the OPD and does not charge the community animal caretaker/feeders.
Our field team treats ~15,000 injured and sick street animals every year within the animal’s territory. Trained animal nurse, veterinarians & volunteers respond daily to calls from Cuffe Parade upto Mahim/Sion
From free OPD services and in-kennel care to regular visits by consulting homeopath and first-aid workshops, WSD provides holistic treatment to street animals. We manage both minor and serious cases with compassion, offering surgeries, diagnostics, and support through trained vets, visiting specialists, and dedicated volunteers. WSD has a limited capacity to treat hospitalise street animals at our center. We also conduct minor surgeries by trained veterinarians and visiting specialists
WSD’s education programme reaches out to different sections of the society and is customised as per the target audience. WSD reaches 1.5 lakh students every year educating them about compassion & kindness towards animals and imparting knowledge about dog bites and rabies prevention.
We rehome abandoned pets and Indies through a thoughtful process similar to that used for human child adoption. Every adopter is screened, interviewed, and encouraged to bond with their chosen dog. Temperament tests ensure the right match, and all dogs over 3 months are vaccinated before going to a loving, responsible home.
WSD offers all its services for FREE so that money is not a deterrent to someone who wants to help animals. Your contribution can ease the financial strains on the organization and aid us to continue quality work.
Love for animals is of course what drives volunteers to WSD. But more importantly, it is the ability to act rationally and responsibly that makes them truly valuable.
